Shillong, Meghalaya

It is not unknown to many, that several tribes around the country have a matriarchal system. The Garo tribe from Meghalaya also has a matrilineal system. Hence it is not surprising to see women going to work or managing businesses in Shillong. This quaint little town is a world apart from the rest of the country. You won’t feel unsafe here at any point of time. A day trip to the most wet place on earth – Cherrapunji/Mawsynram and to the cleanest village in Asia – Mawlynnong is a must! Surprisingly enough, Ahmedabad made it to our list. This bustling city in Gujarat is your place to go if you want go on a foodgasm and still want to visit a few historical places. Mahatma Gandhi stayed here for 22 years and the Sabarmati Ashram is a must visit. The reason we find it safe is because women are often seen traveling very late at night decked in precious jewellery, especially during Navaratri and without any fear.
